Goodbye OR Assalaamu’alaikum

It’s best if we stop saying ‘goodbye’.

It’s actually an abbreviation for ‘God be with you’. And since it does not originate from Islam, we all should be aware that the ‘God’ here was never originally intended to be referring to Allah.

To our Muslim friends, we say “assalaamu’alaikum” at least.

To our non-Muslim friends, we say “bye” or “see you”.

THE PEACE AND JUSTICE THAT UMAR BROUGHT TO PALESTINE

The greatest milestone in the history of Palestine was the conquest of the region in 637 by Islamic armies under the command of Umar ra. Umar’s entry into Jerusalem and the extraordinary maturity and kindness he showed to members of different faiths thereafter foretold the beginning of a glorious age.

After its capture by Umar, Muslims, Christians and Jews in Jerusalem lived together in peace and tranquility for hundreds of years. Muslims never compelled anyone to convert, but many non-Muslims who saw that Islam is the true faith did indeed choose to become Muslims of their own free will.

Jumaah'

As of now, in Singapore, it’s approximately noon here, on a Friday, and our fellow brothers would be preparing for their meeting with Allah swt during Zuhr later. However, what’s so great about Friday? 

Rasulullah s.a.w. said, “The best day on which the Sun rises is Friday. On it Adam was created, on it he was expelled (from Paradise), on it his repentance was accepted, on it he died and on it the Last Hour will take place.”

Rasulullah s.a.w. said, “There is no day more virtuous than Friday. In it there is an hour in which no one would pray to Allah except that Allah hears his prayer.”

Rasulullah s.a.w. said, “Friday consists of twelve hours, one of which is the hour where supplications are granted for believers. This hour is sought during the last hour after Asr.”

Friday is also the day on which one of the greatest verses of the Quran was revealed.

“Today, the unbelievers have lost hope about your religion. Do not be afraid of them but have fear of Me. On this day, I have perfected your religion for you, completed My favours to you, and have chosen Islam as your religion.” [5:3]

A story from the life of the 2nd Caliph, Sayyidina Umar Al-Khattab illustrates the significance of Friday:

A learned person from among the Jews said to Sayyidina Umar, “In the Quran, you people read a certain verse; if that verse had been revealed to us, we would have celebrated that day annually.”

Sayyidina Umar asked, “Which verse is that?”

The man replied, “On this day, I have perfected your religion for you”

Sayyidina Umar replied, “Verily, I remember the day and the place where this verse was revealed. It was already a double celebration for us. Firstly, it was Friday - a day of Eid (Celebration) for all Muslims. Secondly, it was the day of Arafat - the most important day of the Hajj.”

Sayyidina Umar then further stated that this verse was revealed after Asr, while Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. was sitting on his camel.

Hence, my fellow brothers and sisters, I ask Allah to make this Friday and the one’s after this, a day for us to do sincerely Great deeds in the name of Islam, that inshaAllah, will become a habit for us, such that it’ll become a daily habit for us. Amin. Allahu Musta’an. May Allah Guide Us. Wallahwa’lam.
